I Come with Baggage 2019
I Come with Baggage, is an enquiry into the impact of memories, directly and indirectly, how it changes our perception of our past and our place in the future. I explore recollection through family photos, functional and non-functional objects painting them on upcycled plates in onglaze.
GrandMother, onglaze on upcycled plate, 21cm x 21cm, 2019
I source plates from opportunity shops knowing they already permeated with a history of their own.For me, the use of a limited palette, mainly of blue-greys and umbers, suggest the monochrome of an old photograph and the plates that my mothers’ family used in their day to day domestic life.
In Grandmother I used an already decorated plate and painted my grandmother's portrait on top. I didnt really know my grandmother or the particulars of her history. Just the meta-story the one of a Polish Jew that escaped Poland and the holocaust and eventually ended up in Australia. What she felt and thought I will never know, or what she lost and found in her new home.
What I am aiming in my artwork is to create this ‘new thing’ an image that represents my relationship with the incomplete history of my family.
